Welcome to our guide to cemeteries in Elizabethtown-Kitley. With 61 cemeteries and burying grounds throughout the township, each site offers a glimpse into the area's history. Cemetery Guidelines and Administration

Cemeteries operated and maintained by the Township are governed by By-law 15-50, being a by-law to regulate cemeteries and has been approved by the Registrar, Cemeteries Act (revised). Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, S.O. 2002, c. 33 - Bill 209 (FBCSA) is the Provical legislation that governs cemeteries in Ontario. The Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO) enforces the FBCSA. For information on the consumer-protection information booklet, please refer to the Consumer Information Guide on the BAO's website. For information on the administration of cemeteries in Ontario, please refer to Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act.

General Cemetery Rules

The following cemetery rules are designed to ensure a respectful, peaceful, and well-maintained environment for all visitors and those laid to rest. These guidelines cover everything from hours of access and permitted activities to safety regulations and maintenance protocols. By adhering to these rules, we help preserve the dignity of the cemetery and ensure a positive experience for all. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with these regulations before visiting.

No one is allowed to enter or remain in a cemetery during the hours of darkness, except:

  • A Police Officer
  • A municipal employee in the performance of their duties.

No person under the age of twelve years is allowed in a cemetery except under the proper supervision of an adult.

No vehicles, road activities, or recreational activities are allowed in any cemetery.

No burials of any lower animals are allowed in any cemetery.

No interment is permitted until a properly executed burial permit or cremation certificate is received by the Supervisor.

No work is allowed within a cemetery without prior notice given to the Township and property permission granted.

All funerals and interments must be conducted and completed, including restorations of sites, within the following hours:

  • Weekdays: Between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. local time.

  • Saturdays: Between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. local time.

Note:

No funeral, interment, or work of any kind is permitted on:

  • Sundays

  • Statutory holidays

  • Any time outside the stated hours unless the approval of the Supervisor has been obtained.

 

All persons carrying out work for Interment Rights Holders must have:

  • Third-party liability insurance for a minimum of $1,000,000 per accident or occurrence.
  • Workers' compensation for any employees where applicable.

No person shall:

  • Destroy, mutilate, deface, injure, or remove any monument, gravestone, or other structure in the cemetery.

  • Destroy, cut, break, or injure any tree, shrub, or plant in the cemetery, or willfully damage or deface any structure, road, walk, or other works in the cemetery.

  • Play any game or sport in the cemetery.

  • Discharge firearms in the cemetery, except at a military funeral.

  • Willfully and unlawfully disturb persons assembled for the purpose of interring human remains.

  • Commit a nuisance in the cemetery.

  • Bring any animal into the cemetery.
