Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy

The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) governs local government organizations, including municipalities, library boards, and police services boards. It mandates that municipalities protect the privacy of individuals' personal information contained in government records, while also granting individuals the right to request access to municipal records. This includes both general records and records containing their personal information.

The key objectives of MFIPPA are to:

  • Ensure that information held by municipalities is accessible to the public.
  • Limit and specify exemptions to the right of access, ensuring they are necessary and justifiable.
  • Guarantee that decisions regarding the disclosure of information are subject to independent review, separate from the municipality's control.
  • Safeguard the privacy of individuals by protecting their personal information held by municipal organizations.

This framework is designed to balance the public’s right to information with the need to protect individual privacy, creating transparency in government while respecting personal confidentiality.
Many of the Township's records are readily available without the need for a formal Freedom of Information request. Before submitting a request, we encourage you to search our website or contact the Township directly to determine if the information you need is accessible without formal procedures.

For records that are not available through routine access, you may need to submit a formal request in writing to the Deputy Clerk.
Routine Disclosure

A variety of municipal records, such as by-laws, agendas, and minutes, are routinely disclosed and do not require a formal request. These documents can be accessed easily without going through the formal process.

If you need to request a specific document or require more information about Records Management, please contact the Deputy Clerk.
