What is a By-law?

By-laws are local laws passed by the Municipal Council to regulate, control, and manage various aspects of Township administration.

Where does Council get authority to pass a By-law?

Council’s authority to pass by-laws comes from the Province of Ontario, through statutes. The province must first grant municipalities the jurisdiction to legislate on specific issues.

How are By-laws Enforced?

The Township appoints a By-law Enforcement Officer who is responsible for enforcing all municipal by-laws. The officer investigates complaints, determines violations, and takes corrective actions as per the procedures outlined in the relevant by-law.

To learn more about enforcement procedures or which departments handle specific infractions, refer to By-law 08-76.

Lodging a Complaint

To report a violation, submit a written complaint, which helps the Township enforce by-laws effectively. Your identity will remain confidential unless the matter proceeds to court.
