Fire Safety Tips
Plan Ahead
Prevention is the most effective line of defense against fire. The following Fire Safety Tips are designed to help you protect your home and family. By preparing ahead of time, you can significantly reduce the risk of fire and ensure your safety in case of an emergency.

Know Your Civic Address
In an emergency, we can’t help you if we can’t find you.
When you call 9-1-1, you will need to provide your civic/municipal address, which includes your street name and property number (e.g., 1457 Kilkenny Road or 45 Victoria Street).
- Is your civic number sign visible from both directions of travel?
- Is your sign obscured by vegetation, snow, or decorations?
Ensuring your civic address is clearly visible can help emergency responders locate your home quickly and could make a life-saving difference.
Escape Plan
It’s essential to have an escape plan in place before a fire occurs. Planning and practicing escape routes in advance is crucial for responding quickly during an emergency.
For a single-family home, your escape plan should include:
- Knowing two ways out of every room in the house.
- Designating an outdoor meeting location where everyone will gather once they’ve exited the home.
- A safe location from which to call 9-1-1 if needed.
Additional Considerations:
- Write a joint plan with extended family and neighbors to establish several safe alternatives in case the primary escape route is blocked.
- Ensure everyone knows your civic address (house number and correct road name).
