Director of Public Works

Reporting to the Administrator-Clerk, the Director of Public Works will provide leadership and strategic advice in the areas of roads, drainage and waste management.  The successful candidate will be required to manage special capital projects and the day to day activities of the department, consultants and contractors. 

The successful candidate will be a leader capable of effectively directing and mobilizing labour and equipment, planning and directing capital works projects, providing oversight for the Township’s public works operations, communicating effectively with members of the public, community stakeholders and Council and directing a workforce while adeptly dealing with personnel issues. 


  • Minimum of 5 years related experience at a senior management level, preferable in Public Works,
  • Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering Technology (CET) is considered an asset,
  • Certified Road Supervisory (CRSS) or willingness to acquire an asset,
  • Experience with financial and budget administration along with a proficiency in drafting tenders,
  • Demonstrated supervisory knowledge including safety standards and best practices related to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable legislation,
  • Strong leadership, supervisory, administration and communication skills,
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and municipal software applications

Public Works Summer Student Position

The Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley is seeking a student to fill the position of Public Works Summer Student for the duration of the summer months.  This job consists of mostly outside work in any weather condition and can be labour intensive, reporting to the New Dublin public works garage. Some of the duties include:

  • Performing traffic control during road and highway maintenance activities
  • Manually clearing roadside brush and cutting back overgrowth
  • General cleanup responsibilities, litter collection, removal of leaves and/or tree branches or limbs
  • Assisting Public Works Department during pothole patching, traffic sign maintenance and other tasks related to highway and road maintenance
  • Other duties as assigned by the Public Works Lead Hand

Qualifications: Good communications skills are required as the individual may be required to deal with the public. Also, candidates must have the ability to lift up to 20kg, be comfortable climbing and working from ladders, valid First Aid/CPR training would be considered an asset and have appropriate safety footwear. Successful candidates will be required to submit a satisfactory background check prior to the commencement of employment.  Successful candidates must also hold a valid Class G Driver’s license and be enrolled in a postsecondary institution. Preference will be given to students enrolled in Civil Engineering Technician or related educational program and have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Highway Traffic Act Book. The ideal candidates will have related experience. You are available to work May 2019 until the end of August and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
